Turtle Season in Southwest Florida: Nesting, Hatchlings & How to Help

Did you know we have an incredible “Turtle Season” right here in Southwest Florida. Many may think this only happens in remote, different tropical destinations, but it actually brings a magical—and critical—show every year to our area! From May through October, these remarkable creatures make their way ashore to lay eggs and then the cute little hatchlings scurry back to the sea.

In this post, we’ll share everything you need to know—from nesting dates to beach etiquette—so you can enjoy this natural wonder responsibly.

When & Where Turtle Season Happens

  • Timeline: Nesting begins in late May, peaks June–July, and hatchlings emerge August–October.
  • Locations: You can watch for Loggerheads and Green turtles on beaches from Fort Myers Beach to Sanibel and up to Naples.
  • Why SWFL? Pristine beaches, minimal lights and warm sands make our coast a turtle nesting hotspot.

Why It Matters & Why We Love It

  • Biodiversity Importance: Turtles play a vital role in maintaining healthy seagrass beds and marine ecosystems.
  • Cultural Experience: From cozy nights to guided turtle walks, locals celebrate this natural event with reverence.
  • Educational Opportunities: Many nonprofits offer volunteer days and family-friendly programs—helping hatchlings is both fun and purposeful.

How You Can Help Protect Nesting Turtles

  1. Lights Out, Turtles Safe

Turn off beach-facing lights or use turtle-friendly yellow bulbs to avoid disorienting nesting moms and hatchlings.

  2. Respect Nests & Markings

Keep a safe distance—turtle nests are typically marked by red stakes and signs.

  3. Leave the Sand Natural

Avoid digging holes or building sandcastles near nesting areas to ensure hatchlings can make it to the sea.

  4. Report Disturbances

If you see a stranded turtle or egg poaching, call local wildlife authorities like Mote Marine or Lee County SRWS.

Where to See Turtles (Safely & Responsibly)

  • Guided Walks: Check Fort Myers Beach & Sanibel’s Conservation Center for season schedules.
  • Volunteer Nights: Participate through organizations like Mote Marine and J.N. “Ding” Darling NWR.
  • Beach Etiquette: Tape down tent flaps, bring flashlights but not flash, and always walk parallel to shore.
